Iowa State Fair. What are you looking forward to??

Only 44 more days until the Iowa State Fair starts. Last year was the first time I missed in 40 years. Yes, I’m that old. I actually turn 43 in July. Yikes. Anyways, the the Iowa State Fair back this year after a year off due to COVID, what are you look forward to the most?

For me it’s the food. To be honest I eat way too much when I go to the fair and feel like crap afterwards. But, is it worth it? Yes!!! So what are my favorite foods?

  1. The Corndog – Yes, it’s the classic fair food! I have been eating these since i was a little kid. A bit of ketchup and mustard and the fried corndog is complete. Yes, the Iowa State Fair has different varieties of these. You can get normal, footlong, veggie or even some other foods stuffed in a breaded shell that resembles a corndog. It’s all fried goodness!
  2. The Turkey Tenderloin Sandwich – Yes, they have the popular Turkey Leg as well, but I love the classic sandwich. I actually have the recipe they use and make these at home a lot, but nothing beats the fair turkey sandwich. One or two of these will be on my plate in August.
  3. Funnell Cake – Another fried goodness treat. This is typically the only time I eat this treat all year. It’s unhealthy, but with the powdered sugar on top, it’s oh so good!
  4. Georgie’s Roast with the Most Wrap – Gmigs came out with this amazing sandwich in 2019 and it won the best new food. It’s a cheddar tortilla wrap with tender beef pot roast, a white rice mixture containing Chorizo sausage crumbles, roasted green chilies, cheddar Jack cheese, candy corn salsa, crispy corn tortilla crumbles and a sour cream drizzle. On the side is a zesty salsa verde sauce. Hungry thinking about it!
  5. Lemonade – Yes, it’s only lemonade, so not technically a food, but the lemonade at the Iowa State Fair is better than any other place!
  6. JR Doughnuts – These cinnamon-sugary gems are soft and pillowy, their flavor is exceptional and they are made to order. Good anytime of the day!
  7. Hot Beef Sundae – With two scoops of hand-mashed, homestyle potatoes, slow-roasted, fork-tender roast beef, beef gravy and shredded cheddar cheese, topped with a red cherry tomato, you will certainly be stuffed in the best way.

There are plenty of other wonderful food options. Hundreds! What are your favorites? Let us know! Did I mention there are only 44 more days! But, who is counting?
